Sobhraj embarked on a life of crime in Europe in the 1960s and was twice arrested in Paris for auto theft. He married a Parisian woman named Chantal Compagnon and the pair bounced around Europe on a crime spree of robbery and smuggling. In 1973, he escaped the prison where he was being held for armed robbery and fled to Kabul.
