In the documentary, you talk about growing up in Tucson, Arizona, and how culturally rich that was. How do the current politics around the border resonate with you? I feel filled with impotent rage. I grew up in the Sonoran Desert, and the Sonoran Desert is on both sides of the border.
The same food, the same clothes, the same traditional life of ranching and farming. It used to be that you could go across the border and have lunch and visit friends and shop in the little shops there. There was a beautiful department store in the fifties and sixties. My parents had friends on both sides of the border. They were friends with the ranchers, and we went to all their parties and their baptisms and their weddings and their balls. Animals are getting trapped in there.
Children are getting cut on it. In the meantime, you see people serenely skateboarding and girls with their rollerskates, kids playing in the park. I spent time out in the desert when I was still healthy, working with a group of Samaritans who go to find people that are lost. You run into the Minute Men or the Border Patrol every five seconds. The border is fully militarized. People are coming to work.
You have to be pretty desperate to want to cross that desert. You were talking about this back in 2013, when your memoir came out, before it became such a national wedge issue. Were people not paying enough attention before? I lived at the border then. I lived in Tucson for ten years. I saw what was going on.
That was going on in the Bush Administration. So people have been caught in this web of suffering, dying in the desert. Why did you decide to move to San Francisco from Tucson? My children were coming home repeating homophobic remarks they heard at school. So I moved back to San Francisco. I wanted them to have a sense of what a community was like where you could walk to school, walk to the market.
More of an urban-village experience. In Tucson, I was driving in the car for forty-five minutes to get them to school and then forty-five minutes to get them back, in a hot car. I can tell that you have a real sense of mourning over what the border used to be. And they all influence our culture profoundly. The cowboy suit that Roy Rogers would wear, with the yoke shirt and the pearl buttons and the bell-bottom frontier pants and the cowboy hat—those are all Mexican. We imported it.
We eat burritos and tacos, and our music is influenced a lot by Mexican music. It goes back and forth across the border all the time. How did growing up in that hybrid Mexican-American culture shape you as a musician? I listened to a lot of Mexican music on the radio, and my dad had a really great collection of traditional Mexican music. So what drew you to folk rock in the sixties? I loved popular folk music like Peter, Paul and Mary.
I loved the real traditional stuff, like the Carter family. I loved Bob Dylan. And I tried to copy what I could. When I heard the Byrds doing folk rock, I thought that was what I wanted to do. It was a song I found on a Greenbriar Boys record, and I thought it was a strong piece of material. I just liked the song.
But the record company recognized that the song was strong, too, so they had me come back and record it with their musicians and their arrangement. And I was pretty shocked. But it turned out to be a hit. Do you remember hearing it on the radio for the first time? We were on our way to a meeting at Capitol Records, in an old Dodge or something, and I was jammed in the back with our guitars. Then the engine froze, and the car made this horrible metal-on-metal shriek.
We had to push it to the nearest gas station, half a block away. What are your memories of the Troubadour, in West Hollywood? Nobody was anything particular at the time. We were all aspiring musicians. The Dillards were there. The Byrds hung out there.
And then it started to be people like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor. Carole King would play there. When Joni Mitchell played, she played two weeks. I think I saw every single night.

Touring Judy Henske , who was the then reigning queen of folk music, said to me at The Troubadour , "Honey, in this town there are four sexes. Men, women, homosexuals, and girl singers. At this stage, Ronstadt began working with producer and boyfriend John Boylan. I was always a part of my productions. But I always needed a producer who would carry out my whims. Being on the road took its toll both emotionally and professionally. The world is tearing by you, real fast, and all these people are looking at you. At the time, she admired singers like Maria Muldaur for not sacrificing their femininity but says she felt enormous self-imposed pressure to compete with "the boys" at every level. Home Grown — this time hitting the Country Top 20. Backstage at a concert in Texas, Chris Hillman introduced her to Emmylou Harris, telling them, "You two could be good friends," [79] which soon occurred, resulting in frequent collaborations over the following years. Asher attributed the long-term success of his working relationship with Ronstadt to the fact that he was the first person to manage and produce her with whom there was a solely professional relationship.
Many of these rhythms and sounds were part of her Southwestern roots. However, as early as 1970, Ronstadt was being criticized by music "purists" for her "brand of music" which crossed many genres. Ronstadt was the first female artist in popular music history to accumulate four consecutive platinum albums fourteen certified million selling, to date. As for the singles, Rolling Stone pointed out that a whole generation, "but for her, might never have heard the work of artists such as Buddy Holly , Elvis Costello , and Chuck Berry. By singing it... And release yourself... You exorcise that emotion... When interpreting, Ronstadt said she "sticks to what the music demands", in terms of lyrics. And I had to do them both to reestablish who I was. With this in mind, Ronstadt fuses country and rock into a special union.
Along with other musicians such as the Flying Burrito Brothers , Emmylou Harris , Gram Parsons , Swampwater , Neil Young, and the Eagles, she helped free country music from stereotypes and showed rockers that country was okay. However, she stated that she was being pushed hard into singing more rock and roll. In many instances, her own interpretations were more successful than the original recordings, and many times new songwriters were discovered by a larger audience as a result of her interpretation and recording. Ronstadt had major success interpreting songs from a diverse spectrum of artists. The album itself was nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy. Rolling Stone put Ronstadt on its cover in March 1975. It was the first of six Rolling Stone covers shot by photographer Annie Leibovitz. It was climbing the pop and country charts but " Heat Wave ", a rockified version of the 1963 hit by Martha and the Vandellas , was receiving considerable airplay. The album featured a sexy, revealing cover shot and showcased Ronstadt the singer-songwriter, who composed two of its songs, "Try Me Again" co-authored with Andrew Gold and "Lo Siento Mi Vida". Simple Dreams spawned a string of hit singles on numerous charts.
In late 1977, Ronstadt became the first female recording artist to have two songs in the U. Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten at the same time. The same year, she completed a concert tour around Europe. The Rolling Stone cover story was accompanied by a series of photographs of Ronstadt in a skimpy red slip, taken by Annie Leibovitz. Ronstadt felt deceived, not realizing that the photos would be so revealing. She says her manager Peter Asher kicked Leibovitz out of the house when she visited to show them the photographs prior to publication. Leibovitz had refused to let them veto any of the photos, which included one of Ronstadt sprawled across a bed in her underpants. She was right. Living in the USA was the first album by any recording act in music history to ship double-platinum over 2 million advance copies. Ronstadt continued this theme on concert tour promotional posters with photos of her on roller skates in a dramatic pose with a large American flag in the background.
Rounding out the band are some of L. Asher also adds percussion. She did what no other woman, man or band had ever done…she was the first artist to ship an album Double-Platinum. The album was Living In The U.
